Taghut 

Kufr bi-taghut (disbelief in taghut) and Iman billah is the first requirement to enter Islam. Nobody can be a Muslim without rejecting the taghut and disbelieving in it. 

Allah ta’ala says (interpretation of the meaning): 

And We have indeed sent to every nation a messenger (saying to his people): ‘Worship Allah alone and distance (yourself) from Taghut.’ (Nahl 16/36)

And Allah ta’ala says (interpretation of the meaning): 

There is no compulsion in the Religion. Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path. So whoever disbelieves in the Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has taken hold of the firmest handhold that will never break. And Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (Al-Baqarah 2/256)

Kufr bi-Taghut is to believe in the invalidity of worshiping other than Allah, and that you abandon taghut and the worship to it, and that you hate it, make takfir of its people, and to have enmity towards them.

Imam ash-Shafi’ī said: “There are some signs where you can see someone rejecting idols: hating on the tongue, showing disbelief in the idol and removing it when possible.” (Kitab al-Umm)

In order to be able to make Kufr bi-Taghut a clear and detailed knowledge of the definition of taghut is required. After all, no one can reject, disbelieve, hate, and disassociate from what they don’t know. 

Linguistic meaning of Taghut

The meaning given to Taghut by many people is “stones”, “idols”, “shaytaan”, “shrines” or “everything that’s worshiped besides Allah and is pleased with it – like Fir’awn (Pharaoh).” (As if Pharaoh was the first human taghut or there aren’t examples of modern Pharaohs to mention.) While all these meanings are correct, it’s still a narrow definition and not the entire meaning of taghut. The real meaning of taghut is far more comprehensive.

In the literal meaning, the word ‘Taghut’ derives from the verb ‘Tagha’ which means ‘to exceed the proper bounds or limits.’

Allah ta’ala states (interpretation of the meaning):

Verily when the water rose beyond its limits (tagha) (Nuh’s flood). We carried you (mankind) in the floating (ship). (Al Haqqah 69/11)

According to Layth, Abu Ubayd, Kisai, Wahidi and the majority of the scholars of Lughah, the linguistic meaning of taghut is everything which is worshiped besides Allah ta’ala.

Ibn Mandhūr stated: “At-Taghut: Whatever is worshiped besides Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic; and every leader of misguidance is a taghut.” (Lisān al-ʿArab 8/444)

Al Akhfash said: “At Taghut are the idols, and the taghut are from mankind and jinn.”

The word Taghut is used for all forms; singular, plural, masculin or feminine.

Example of the singular usage is this ayah (interpretation of the meaning):

They wish to go for judgment (in their disputes) to the Taghut. (An-Nisa 4/60)

Example of the plural usage is this ayah (interpretation of the meaning):

Of those who reject faith the awliya (helpers, guardians, patrons) are the taghuts: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. (Al-Baqarah 2/257)

Example of feminine usage is this ayah (interpretation of the meaning):

Those who distance (themselves) from taghut… (Az-Zumar 39/17)

Definition of Taghut in the Shariah

In Shariah, the definition of ‘Taghut’ is ‘anyone who exceeds the proper limits by ascribing to himself any of the rights and attributes of Allah ta’ala and makes himself a partner with Allah ta’ala’, and makes himself a false god/deity.

Allah ta’ala says (interpretation of the meaning):

Go to Fir’aun; verily, he has transgressed all bounds (Tagha) (in crimes, sins, polytheism, disbelief). (An-Naz’iat 79/17)

In other words, a Taghut is any one who ascribes to himself one of the acts of Allah ta’ala, such as creation, provision, or legislation or ascribes to himself any of the attributes of Allah ta’ala which exclusively belongs to Allah, such as knowledge of the ghayb (unseen), etc. Or anyone or anything whom these attributes are ascribed to.

According to Ibn Manzur in Lisan al Arab: “Taghut is everything that is worshiped beside Allah, azza wa jalla and every head and leader in misguidance is a taghut. And it was said: Taghut are idols, and it was said shaytaan, and it was said soothsayers and priests. And it was said: the transgressors from Ahlu Kitab. And the words of Allah ta’ala: “They believe in Jibt and Taghut.” It has been said: Jibt and taghut here is Huyay b. Ahtab and Ka’b ibn Ashraf, the two jews. Because they followed their orders and obeyed them besides Allah ta’ala.   And the words of Allah ta’ala: [they wish to go for judgment (in their disputes) to the Taghut]; meaning to the priest and soothsayers and to shaytaan. Layth said: Taghut with an extra ta’a, which is derived from Tagha.Abu Ishaq said: Everything that is worshipped besides Allah azza wa jalla is jibt and taghut.And it has been said: Jibt and Taghut are the soothsayers and the Shayateen.And in some of the Tafsir it has been said: Jibt and taghut are Huyay ibn Ahtab and Ka’b ibn Ashraf, the two jews. And Azhari said: This is not outside what the people of the language said, because if they followed their orders and commands, they obeyed them instead of Allah.Shimr said: Taghut is from the idols and from shaytaan.Ibn al Arabi said: Jibt is the leader of the jews and taghut is the leader of the nasara (christians).Taghut is the king of Byzantium/Rome.Layth said: Taghut is the stubborn haughty tyrant.Ibn Shamil said: Taghut is the haughty, arrogant, foolish tyrant.Jibt is everything that is worshiped besides Allah. And it has been said that it is a word that refers to the idol, the priest and soothsayer, and the sorcerer and their likes.”

Taghut is all that which causes the person to exceed the limits with regards to that which is worshiped, followed, or obeyed. And taghut is everything that misguides from the truth. So the Taghut in any nation is whosoever turns to other than Allah and His Messenger, (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), for matters of judgment; or is pleased to be worshiped besides Allah; or is followed without a clear proof from Allah; or is obeyed in that which is known to be disobedience to Allah. 

A person also becomes a Taghut if he/she allows certain acts of worship to be directed to him/her (acts such as invocation, offering, sacrifice, legislation etc). So anyone who ascribes to himself any of the above acts of worship has become a Taghut.

Taghut (and its forms) in the Qur’an

And the Jews said, `Allâh´s hand is tied.´ May their own hands be tied, and cursed are they for what they said. Nay, both His hands are wide open (and free). He spends as He pleases. And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will most surely increase many of them in inordinate rebellion (tughyanan) and in disbelief. And We have kindled enmity and hatred among them till the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindle a fire for war, Allâh puts it out, but they strive to create disorder in the land, whereas Allâh does not love those who spread corruption (Al Maidah 5/64)

So stand you upright, as you have been commanded, and (also) those who (have left their evil ways and) turned to Allâh (in repentance) and joined you. Do not exceed the bounds (set by Allâh, O people!) (la taghaw). He indeed is the Observer of your deeds. (Hud 11/112)

And if Allah should hasten the evil to men as they desire the hastening of good, their doom should certainly have been decreed for them; but We leave those alone who hope not for Our meeting in their transgression (tughyanihim), blindly wandering on. (Yunus 10/11)

Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds (tagha). (TaHa 20/43)

And when We said to you: Surely your Lord encompasses men; and We did not make the vision which We showed you but a trial for men and the cursed tree in the Quran as well; and We cause them to fear, but it only adds to their great inordinacy (tughyanan). (al Isra’ 17/60)

And We turn away their hearts and their visions, as they refused to believe in it the first time, and We leave them blundering in their rebellion (tughyanihim). (al An’am 6/110)

And as for the boy, his parents were believers and we feared that he would involve them in trouble through transgression (tughyanan) and disbelief. (al Kahf 18/80)

Whomever Allah misguides has no guide. And He leaves them blundering in their transgression (tughyanihim). (al A’raf 7/186)

Go to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds (tagha). (TaHa 20/24)

Both (Musa and Haroon) said, `Our Lord! We fear lest he (Pharaoh) hasten with insolence against us, or lest he transgress all bounds (yatgha). (TaHa 20/45)

(All these people were) those who committed (all sorts of) excesses in the lands. (e.g. they terrorized the lands) (taghaw). (Al Fajr 89/11)

(The tribe of) Thamûd belied (Sâlih), because of their rebelliousness/pride (bitaghwaha). (Ash Shams 91/11)

Allah mocks at them and gives them an increase in their transgression (tughyanihim) to wander blindly. (Al Baqarah 2/15)

Say, `O People of the Scripture! you stand no where unless you observe the Torah and the Evangel and that (- Qur´ân) which has (now) been revealed to you from your Lord.´ And certainly that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will increase many of them in ordinate rebellion (tughyanan) and disbelief; so do not grieve for the disbelieving people. (Al Maidah 5/68)

So do not transgress (tatghaw) in the balance/measure. (Ar Rahman 55/8)

For the transgressors (tagheen) a place of destination: (An Naba 78/22)

As for Thamûd, they were destroyed by an exceedingly violent and thunderous blast (taghiyyah). (Al Haaqqah 69/5)

They said, “Woe to us – we were indeed rebellious (tagheen).” (Al Qalam 68/31)

Did you not see those whose claim is that they believe in what has been sent down on you and what was sent down before you, and they then wish to make the taghut their judge, whereas they were ordered to completely reject him? And the shaytaan wishes to mislead them far astray. (An Nisa 4/60)

The believers fight for Allah’s cause; and the disbelievers fight for the cause of taghut – so fight against the friends of shaytaan; undoubtedly shaytaan’s plotting is weak. (An Nisa 4/76)

Did you not see those who received a share of the Book, that they believe in jibt and the taghut, and say regarding the disbelievers that they are more rightly guided than those who have believed (An Nisa 4/51)

Eat of the good things We have provided for you, but do not be excessive (tatghaw) therein, or My wrath will befall you. And whoever My wrath befalls is certainly doomed (TaHa 20/81)

As for him who has transgressed all bounds (tagha). (an Nazi’at 79/37)

Nay! Man indeed indulge in transgression (layatgha). (al Alaq 96/6)

When the waters overflowed (tagha), We carried you in the cruising ship. (al Haqqah 69/11)

Go to Pharaoh, surely he has transgressed beyond bounds. (tagha) (an Nazi’at 79/17)

As for those who distance (themselves from) the worship of taghut, and devote themselves to Allah — for them are glad tidings; therefore give glad tidings to My servants. (Az Zumar 39/17)

Have they handed this down from one to another. In fact, they are rebellious people (taghun). (Adh Dhariyat 51/53)

Or is it that their dreams compel them to this. Or are they rebellious people (taghun)? (At Tur 52/32)

And the people of Nuh before; surely they were most unjust and most rebellious (atgha). (An Najm 53/52)

Even if We had mercy on them, and relieved their problems, they would still blindly persist in their defiance (tughyanihim). (Al Mu’minun 23/75)

His companion will say, `O our Lord! it was not I that seduced him to transgress (I did not make him rebel) (atghaytuhu) but he himself was far astray.´ (Qaf 50/27)

The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit (tagha). (An Najm 53/17)

There is no compulsion in deen (religion); the right path has become very distinct from error; and whoever rejects taghut and believes in Allah has grasped a very firm handhold which never will loosen. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (Al Baqarah 2/256)

Say, “Shall I tell you of those who are in a worse position than this, in Allah’s sight? It is those whom Allah has cursed and has wreaked His wrath upon and turned some of them into apes and swine, and worshippers of the taghut; theirs is a worse destination and they have wandered further astray from the Straight Path.” (Al Maidah 5/60)

Allah is the Wali (Protector, Guardian) of those who believe – He removes them from realms of darkness towards light; and the Awliya (supporters) of disbelievers are the taghut – they remove them from light towards the realms of darkness; it is they who are the people of fire; they will remain in it forever. (Al Baqarah 2/257)

All this (is for the virtuous). But the transgressors (tagheen) will have a miserable return. (Saad 38/55)

And We have indeed sent to every nation a messenger (saying to his people): ‘Worship Allah alone and distance (yourself from) the taghut.’ (An Nahl 16/36)

And we did not have any control over you; but in fact you yourselves were rebellious (tagheen). (As Saffat 37/30)

Taghut in the Sunnah

Narrated Abu Huraira, radhiya-Allahu  anhu: Allah’s Messenger, sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam, said, “The Hour will not be established till the buttocks of the women of the tribe of Daws move while going round Dhul-Khalasa.” Dhul-Khalasa was the taghiyyah (the old idol) of the Daws tribe which they used to worship in the jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period of ignorance). (Sahih al-Bukhari 7116)

‘Aun reported Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud, radhiya-Allahu  anhu, saying, “Two greedy ones never attain satisfaction: the Sahib ul ‘Ilm (learned man) and the Sahib ud Dunya (worldly man), but they are not equal. The learned man becomes more pleasing to Ar Rahman (the Compassionate One), but the worldly man perseveres in transgression (tughyan).” Then ‘Abdullah [ibn Mas’ud] recited, “Nay, but man transgresses (layatgha) in considering that he is self-sufficient.” He added, “The other is preferable, for ‘only those of His servants who are learned fear Allah.’ ” (Mishkat al-Masabih 261, and Darimi transmitted it)

Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab: Al-Bahira was an animal whose milk was spared for the idols (tawaghit), and so nobody was allowed to milk it. As-Saiba was an animal which they (i.e infidels) used to set free in the names of their gods so that it would not be used for carrying anything. Abu Huraira said, “The Prophet,  salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, ‘I saw `Amr bin ‘Amir bin Luhai Al-Khuza`i dragging his intestines in the (Hell) Fire, for he was the first man who started the custom of releasing animals (for the sake of false gods).’ ” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3521)

From a very lengthy hadiths narrated by Abu Huraira, radhiya-Allahu anhu:The people said to the Messenger of Allah, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam: Oh Messenger of Allah, will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection? The Messenger of Allah,  salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: Do you have any trouble seeing the moon on the night when it is full? They said: No, oh Messenger of Allah. He (the Messenger) further said: Do you have any trouble seeing the sun, when there is no cloud over it? They said: No, oh Messenger of Allah. He said: Verily you will see Him like this (as you see the sun and the moon). Allah will gather the people on the Day of Resurrection and say: Let every people follow what they worshiped. Those who worshiped the sun will follow the sun, and those who worshiped the moon will follow the moon, and those who worshiped the tawaghit will follow the tawaghit. (Sahih Muslim 182a)

It was narrated from ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah, radhiya-Allahu  anhu, that the Messenger of Allah, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said:”Do not swear by your forefathers or by at-Tawaghit.” (Sunan An-Nasa’i 3774)

Narrated `Urwa: I asked `Aisha, radhiya-Allahu  anha, (regarding the Sai between As Safa and Al-Marwa). She said, “Out of reverence to the idol Manat (Manat at Taghiyyah) which was placed in Al-Mushailal, those who used to enter the state of Ihram in its name, used not to perform Sai between As-Safa and Al-Marwa, so Allah revealed: ‘Verily! As-Safa and Al-Marwa (two mountains at Mecca) are among the symbols of Allah.’ (al Baqarah 2/158). Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, and the Muslims used to perform Sai (between them).” Sufyan said: Manat was at Al-Mushailal in Qudaid. `Aisha added, “The Verse was revealed in connection with the Ansar. They and (the tribe of) Ghassan used to enter the state of lhram in the name of Manat before they embraced Islam.” `Aisha added, “There were men from the Ansar who used to enter the state of lhram in the name of Manat which was an idol between Mecca and Medina. They said, “O Allah’s Messenger! We used not to perform the Tawaf (Sai) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa out of reverence to Manat.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 4861)

Asma bint ‘Umais Al-Khath’amiyyah, radhiya-Allahu  anha, narrated that the Messenger of Allah,  salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said:”What an evil servant is the one who fancies himself and becomes vain, forgetting the Most Great, the Most High. What an evil servant is the one who forces and behaves hostility, forgetting the Compeller, the Most High. What an evil servant is the one who is heedless and diverted, forgetting about the graves and the trials. What an evil servant is the one who is violent and tyrannical (tagha), forgetting his beginnings or his end. What an evil servant is the one who seeks the world through the religion. What an evil servant is the one who seeks the religion through his desires. What an evil servant is the one who puts all hope in his own zeal. What an evil servant is the worshiper who is misled by his desire. What an evil servant is the one whose aspirations humiliate him.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2448)

Statements of the Salaf regarding Taghut

‘Umar Ibnul-Khattaab radhiya-Allahu anhu said: “The Taghut is Shaytaan.” (Related by At-Tabari in Jaami’ul-Bayan ‘an-Ta’weelil-Qur’an no. 5834 with a strong chain and in Sahîh’ul Bukhârî, the book of Tafsîr, in the Âyah an-Nisâ 4/43)

Jaabir, radhiya-Allahu anhu, said: “The Taghut are the soothsayers and fortune-tellers upon whom the devils descend.” (Related by At-Tabari in his Tafseer no. 5845)

Imam Malik said: “Taghut is that which is worshiped besides Allah.” (Ibnu Wahb, the student of Imam Mâlik, narrated this in his book “al-Jâmi fî Tafsîr’il Qur’ân 2/135, 270)

According to Ibn Abbas, radhiya-Allahu anhum, “The Jibt are the idols and taghut are those who serve them. It is because they divert the people, by inventing lies in the name of them.”

According to another report from Ibn Abbas, radhiya-Allahu anhum, “Jibt is soothsayer and taghut is magician.”

Mujâhid said regarding Taghut, “(Taghut is) the shaytaan in the shape of a man whom the people come to for judgment between them while he controls their affairs.” (as-Suyûtî in Ad-Durr’ul Manthûr 2/22, he has attributed it to Ibnu Jarîr, Ibnu Mundhir, and Ibnu Abî Hâtim)

Ikrimah said that the soothsayers (those who claim to know the Ghayb) are also Taghut. (Sahîh’ul Bukhârî, Kitâb’ut Tafsîr, regarding the Âyah An-Nisâ 4/43)

Sha’bi, A’ta and Mujahid said: “Jibt is magic, sorcery. Taghut is shaytaan, soothsayers, priests and every head/leader of deviance/misguidance.” (Lisan al Arab)

Ibn Abbas, (May Allah be pleased with them both), said: “Taghut is Ka’b ibn al Ashraf and Jibt is Huyay ibn Akhtab.” (Lisan al Arab)

Abu Aliyah said that the Taghut are the magicians, while attributing it to Ibnu Jarîr at-Tabarî. (as-Suyûtî, ad-Durr’ul Manthûr, 2/22)

Abu Ishaq said: Everything that is worshiped besides Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, is a sorcerer and a taghut. It is said, ‘[Everything that is worshiped besides Allah:] the sorcerer, the taghut, the soothsayer and Satan… (Lisan al-ʿArab 15/9)

Ash-Shaʿbī, ʿAtā’, Mujahid and Abu Aliyya all said: ‘“Jibt is the sorcerer, the magician. At-Taghut is: Satan, the soothsayer and every head of misguidance.” (Lisan al-ʿArab 15/9)

One of the salaf said about the ayah: “… they wish to go for judgment (in their disputes) to the Taghut…” (Nisa 4/60) This is the jew Kab b. Ashraf. Another said: ‘That is Huyay b. Ahtab.’ It is because these two were the leaders of deviation; they earned this name. It is because they exaggerated in rage, cheated the people and have ensured that the jews obey them in reference to revolting against Allah ta’ala. Therefore, whoever embodies these characteristics is a taghut.

From the words of the salaf scholars we understand that: Taghut is the one who prevents and/or refers to other directions than worshiping Allah ta’ala, being sincere in deen, obeying Allah and His Messenger, (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). This can be shayatin from the jinn and people, a tree, a stone and other things. Every man-made law which is opposing the Islamic Shariah, every law made to judge human blood, goods and chastity, every law which lifts/removes the punishments of Allah’s Shariah, every law which cancels the prohibition of interest (riba), adultery, fornication (zina) and alcohol is a taghut. In fact, every single rule of these is itself a taghut. 

In the same way, every book written to turn away from the haq (truth) and from the Shariah brought by the Messenger of Allah, (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), whatsoever the intention of the author is, maybe he has written it knowingly or without knowledge, this book is a taghut. 

Taghut is everything that is worshiped other than Allah, the leading ones in heresy, calling to be superstitious and showing this as it is something good. All those who are worshiped besides Allah, who lead the way in falsehood, who call to falsehood and make it look good are taghut. 

In addition, those who judge between people with contrary laws to the laws of Allah and His Messenger, (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), soothsayers, magicians, wizards, those who call people with fabricated and heretic tales to worship graves, the guards of the graves, the menials of the graves and the protectors of the graves are all taghut.  

Taghut also is any authority that’s at odds with the ruling of Allah ta’ala; and any judgment that is not based upon the Shariah of Allah ta’ala. Any onslaught against the Ulūhiyyah (divinity) or Hakimiyyah (right to rule and judge) of Allah ta’ala is the worst type of assault and the most evil Tughyan. Such types of actions enter fully under the definition of Taghut by word and meaning. 

So everything that is worshiped besides Allah, while being pleased with this worship – whether it is something worshiped, someone followed, or someone obeyed in the absence of obedience to Allah and His Messenger (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then that is a taghut. 

The heads of the taghut today 

Here is a short explanation of who and what is/are the taghut of today’s world: As easy as it is to recognize the taghout of today’s world it is also as hard to recognize it because of its disguise. We can come across it hidden even under the umbrella of Islam. 

A Muslim must have baraa (disassociation) with the taghut and not wala (association). In order to refrain from and resist the taghut, one must know, be familiar with and be able to recognize the taghout and its establishments. 

The following is a list of the most common establishments, institutions, employees, leaders etc. of the taghut of today:

Why is the UN a taghut and how is the UN worshiped?

The UN legislates laws and enforces these laws on their member states. Legislating is the Right of Allah alone. Giving them the “right” to legislate is worshiping them.  

“Or do they have partners legislating for them a deen (religion, law) which Allah has not permitted?” (ash-Shura 42/21)

The UN are not only a taghut because they believe that they have the authority to legislate, but they are also a taghut because of other things. 

According to their own charter: 

The Purposes of the United Nations are:

Article 1

1. To maintain international peace and security
2. To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples
3. To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion

Article 2

The Organization and its Members, in pursuit of the Purposes stated in Article 1, shall act in accordance with the following Principles.

1. The Organization is based on the principle of the sovereign equality of all its Members.
2. All Members, in order to ensure to all of them the rights and benefits resulting from membership, shall fulfill in good faith the obligations assumed by them in accordance with the present Charter.
3. All Members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered.
4. All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.

In other words, they are calling for the nullification of fundamental and basic elements in Islam such as that Sovereignity belongs to Allah ta’ala alone, al Walaa wa’l Baraa, Jihad and much more.

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the UN and their laws, make Takfir on the UN and on every country that is member of the UN and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on the UN and their member states.

Why are these states taghut and how are they worshiped?

Of the world’s 196 countries, there are currently 193 member countries of the UN. Vatican city and Palestine are assigned the status of permanent observers of UN proceedings. Taiwan is not officially recognized as independent by most UN member countries. Therefore, Taiwan is both non-member and non-country in the eyes of the United Nations. These 3 countries not being members doesn’t make them non-taghut, as they still legislate laws opposed to the laws of Allah ta’ala. And the fact that Palestine is a permanent observer shows that Palestine is -though not a direct member- is still part of the UN and thus pleased with and supports everything the UN stands for and represents. 

The General Assembly meets in regular yearly sessions. The assembly is led by a president, elected from among the member states on a rotating regional basis. When the General Assembly decides on important questions such as those on peace and security, admission of new members and budgetary matters, a two-thirds majority of those present and voting is required. All other questions are decided by a majority vote. Each member country has one vote. 

Furthermore, each one of the existing countries are ruled by man-made laws or systems opposing the Shariah of Allah. Legislating is the Right of Allah alone. Acknowledging the “right” of these countries to legislate is worshiping them. Not to mention that obedience IS worship.

Legislating/making laws is the Right of Allah ta’ala. He has no partner in legislating, like he has no partner in creating, giving life, sending down rain, etc. Giving the leaders of these states the “right” to make laws is worshiping them.

It doesn’t matter whether these taghut leaders and those who don’t make takfir on them pray, fast, recite the Quran, wear hijab, have Islamic names, etc. None of their apparent actions or claims matter if they do not uphold and honor the right of Allah as a legislator just as someone is NOT a Muslim – even if they “look” the part – if they don’t uphold and honor the right of Allah as the Creator, Sustainer, etc. 

All governments who make and assist in making their own laws; parliaments, members of parliaments, ministries etc. 

Why are these governments, parliaments and their members taghut and how are they worshiped?

Someone who opposes something that Allah made halal or haram, good or bad or who imposes laws on people that his whims and desires deem appropriate, claiming that he has the right to legislate -which is the Right of Allah alone- made himself equal to Allah and became a taghut. A lawmaker can be a person, a system, a community, a party, a national assembly, a clergyman, as well as a priest or a sheikh.

Any law that goes against the laws of Allah is a taghut. 

Allah ta’ala says:

Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, and what was revealed before you. They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it. (An Nisa 4/60)

The taghut mentioned in this ayah are all laws other than the laws of Allah. To judge, obey, and not object to the laws other than the laws of Allah ta’ala is worshiping them. Because these deeds can be done only and only for the laws of Allah. If someone gives the rights and authority that only can be given to the laws of Allah to the laws made by human beings, he has worshiped these laws and these laws have become the taghut of that person.

A Muslim has to reject these laws – every single one of them, he or she has to disrespect these laws and not abide by them, make Takfir on the ones who honor these laws and abide by them and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

The officials of these governments and states 

Why are the officials of these states taghut and how are they worshiped?

The officials of these governments and states commit the greatest crime against Allah. Because they make laws without obeying Allah’s command and without His permission and they represent the assemblies where these laws are made. Each one of the members of assemblies that make laws, and especially the officials of these governments and states, sees themselves to have  the right and power to legislate and adjudicate. Because this is the Right of Allah alone they equate themselves with Allah and thus are taghut.

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject all officials of government and states, make Takfir on them and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

The teachers of the schools of these governments and states

Why are teachers taghut and how are they worshiped?

The schools in these countries and states are the official institutions to brainwash children and inject them with the religion of these states. Teachers are the means of the systems and governments to pollute and corrupt the minds and brains of children from a young age so that they can be non-thinking subjects and obedient soldiers to the taghut once they grow up.    

The role of teachers in today’s societies is very similar to the role of the rabbis and monks in former jewish and christian societies and with the magicians in the society of Egypt during the time of the Pharaohs.

For example, teachers are at the forefront of spreading the ideologies (secularism, democracy, nationalism, patriotism, humanism, globalism, capitalism, liberalism, pluralism, etc.) of the taghut and injecting them into young kids. It’s in schools where young children are taught to respect and uphold the taghut laws and/or glorify their nation’s taghut leader. 

They have taken their rabbis (scholars) and their monks as gods beside Allah, and also Masih the son of Maryam. And they were not commanded but to worship only One God. There is no god but He. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him. (At Tawbah 9/31)

In an explanation of this Ayah, At -Tirmidhi recorded that `Adi bin Hatim said, “O Allah’s Messenger! They did not worship them.” The Prophet, salla-Allahu alaihi wa sallam, said, Yes they did. They (monks and rabbis) allowed the impermissible for them and they prohibited the lawful for them, and they followed them in that. That was their worship of them.

He said, “Throw,” and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great feat of magic. (Al A’raf 7/116)

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject all teachers, he or she can’t send his or her children to these teachers, he or she has to make Takfir on them and make Takfir on everyone who sends their children to them, and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

Democracy 

Why is democracy a taghut and how is it worshiped?

According to democracy, worship (or acts of worship) to Allah is limited to masjids, churches, temples, and similar places. But for private or public matters of life, the religion of democracy is in charge. In other words, a person who is a ruler in the religion of democracy has the “right” to hold the authority that belongs to Allah. However, according to democracy, Allah does NOT have the authority to make laws. 

If someone demands this Right of Allah being given to Allah, he will be accused of using religion as a political tool, or he will be accused of being a fundamentalist or a terrorist.

In the religion of democracy, there is freedom of belief, even if it is against the religion of Allah, even if the religion of Allah is mocked, as long as it does not violate human laws. Whoever wishes commits prostitution, commits adultery, sodomy, etc.

In democracy everyone has the “right” to participate in elections and the “right” of being elected. This means everyone has the right to actively take part in legislation. To vote means giving your “right” to make laws to a representative who does this on your behalf.

The political parties in these systems participate in legislation. Legislation is the Right of Allah alone and belongs to Him alone. In short, they equate themselves with Allah.

Voting means choosing the person that represents the people or part of them in the parliament. Voting is a pillar of democracy (in democracy everybody is given the right to legislate) and participation in elections means nothing else but giving your “right” of making laws to your representative. In simple terms, voting is choosing one’s “Ilah” (God) to legislate on their behalf.

The lawyers, advocates, etc. who believe, consult, apply and seek the verdict of and judgment from the laws of these governments

Why are lawyers taghut and how are they worshiped?

Although the definition and sometimes the names of lawyers differ a bit in every country, a lawyer, in general, is someone who has been educated in the law (the religion and shariah) of the taghut systems and regimes. They act – with the power of attorney – as adjudicators on behalf of their clients in the taghut courts. They also prepare, interpret and apply the law.

Lawyers are one of the lifelines of taghut systems around the world as they represent, defend and prosecute according to man-made laws. A lawyer is a taghut whether they are based in a country where none of the Shariah of Allah are implemented or whether they are based in a country where the Shariah of Allah is mixed with man-made laws. 

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject these lawyers and cannot hire a lawyer. A Muslim must also make Takfir on lawyers and those who hire lawyers and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

The judges who judge on the basis of these laws and everybody who doesn’t judge according to what Allah has revealed 

Why are these judges a taghut and how are they worshiped?

Allah ta’ala says (interpretation of the verse):

Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it. (An Nisa 4/60)

This ayah was revealed regarding those who wanted to seek judgment from Ka’b ibn al Ashraf, a jewish judge of Jahiliyyah. Therefore everybody with the same title and attribute – namely a judge who doesn’t judge according to the laws of Allah ta’ala – is a taghut, just like Ka’b ibn al Ashraf.

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject these judges and cannot give them the power and right to judge over him or her.  He or she has to make Takfir on judges and on those who let themselves be judged by these judges and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

The police and other officers that defend and enforce these laws 

Why are the police taghut and how are they worshiped?

The рrіmаrу rоlеs of the police аrе оrdеr mаіntеnаnсе, сrіmе соntrоl, and lаw еnfоrсеmеnt. In other words, they strive to keep the “order” of the regime and enforce the worship of the taghut to the people. Therefore they are not only the head of those who call to falsehood, but also the guardians of the system of falsehood and evil. 

So We took him (Firawun, Pharaoh) and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy. (Adh Dhariyat 51/40)

And establish them in the land and show Pharaoh and [his minister] Haman and their soldiers through them that which they had feared. (Al Qasas 28/6)

And he was arrogant, he (Firawun, Pharaoh) and his soldiers, in the land, without right. (Al Qasas 28/39)

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the police and cannot work for them or be member of their units or be part of them in any other way. A Muslim has to make Takfir on the police and every single police-officer and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

The military of these governments who fight on the basis of these laws, to defend and protect these governments. And everybody who joins these armies

Why is the army a taghut and how are they worshiped?

The main task of the military is defined as defense of the state and its interests against external threats. Beyond warfare, the military may be employed in additional sanctioned and non-sanctioned functions within the state, including internal security threats, population control, the promotion of a political agenda, emergency services and reconstruction, protecting corporate economic interests, social ceremonies and national honor guards.

Therefore they are not only the head of those who call to falsehood, but also the protectors of the system of falsehood and evil.

The religious leaders who support and justify these laws 

Why are the religious leaders taghut and how are they worshiped?

The religious figures and leaders, especially those in the countries that were Land of Islam in the past are amongst the most evil taghut. They give their regimes the appearance of Islam and mislead the people – who willingly follow them without questioning or doubting. In particular, the taghut regimes in the Arab world are only able to survive due to the help of these deviant religious figures and scholars.

This previous verse and hadith show that it doesn’t matter what the title or appearance of an individual is. If they are followed and obeyed (in things Allah has not legislated) then they are taghut and those who follow and obey them have taken them as gods besides Allah.

A Muslim has to reject these religious figures and so-called scholars. He or she has to make Takfir on them and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

The wealthy “elite” who support, help, maintain, and contribute to these systems, governments (and non-government) and all of its departments, branches, institutions, establishments etc. 

Why are they a taghut and how are they worshiped?

The wealthy so-called elite are the financial backbone of these systems. They contribute to whatever and whoever they want to have in power – as their puppets. They use their wealth to promote and support falsehood. They have the monopoly to print money and thus are able not only to increase or decrease the value of money just as they want, but also to control, manage and manipulate whole economies, governments and countries.  

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the so-called elite. He or she has to make Takfir on them and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

The propagators of these governments; who call upon the nation to support, obey, assist, have sympathy, care for… 

Why are they taghut and how are they worshiped?

Everybody who calls to an idoelogy, system or religion other than Islam is a taghut. Following their calls is worshiping them as they’re calling to what Allah has not legislated. This is like the way the Christians and Jews have taken their monks and Rabbis as Lords besides Allah by obeying them. Or like someone who obeys mushrikun by eating meat that didn’t have Allah’s Name mentioned. 

Eat not (O believers) of that meat which Allah’s Name has not been mentioned for it is certainly fisq (a sin and disobedience to Allah). And certainly, the devils inspire their friends to dispute with you. And if you obey them, then you will be, indeed, mushrikoon. Al An’am: 6: 121

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject these propagators. He or she has to make Takfir on them and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

Everyone who supports, obeys, assists, cares for, and has sympathy etc… for these governments regardless of whom or what they are 

Why are they tawagheet (plural of taghut) and how are they worshiped?

Assisting, supporting and caring for these systems and governments is helping the call to misguidance and falsehood. Everybody who calls to falsehood or helps in calling to falsehood is a taghut.  

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject those who supports and assist these systems and governments. He or she has to make Takfir on them and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

Those who make allegiance with the taghut against the Muslims

Why are those who make allegiance with the taghut against the Muslims taghut and how are they worshiped?

Those who make allegiance with the taghut against Muslims are the ones who are trying to extinguish Islam. By joining the war against Islam they are not only helping those who fight Islam, but they are taking an active role and leadership in calling towards the filthy ideologies that are opposing Islam. 

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject those who make allegiance with the taghut against Muslims, make Takfir on them and make Takfir on everyone who doesn’t make Takfir on them. 

Those who do not takfir, who take as awliya (and not have enmity to towards these people) who show compassion, have sympathy, support, assist, aid, obey, follow etc. to these governments and all of their institutions 

Why are they tawagheet and how are they worshiped?

Not making takfir on those who support and assist these systems is giving these people and the systems they love and support validity and recognition. We already have said that taghut is everything that causes the person to exceed the limits with regards to that which is worshiped, followed, or obeyed. And taghut is everything that misguides from the truth.    

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject those who do not make takfir on those who support and assist these systems, and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

Whims and desires

Why are whims and desires a taghut and how are they worshiped?

A person can take their whims and desires as gods besides Allah. 

Allah ta’ala says: 

Whereas for the one who feared to stand before his Lord, and restrained himself from the (evil) desire. (An Nazi’at 79/40)

This means that he protected himself from following the lusts that his soul desires. In the Qur’an Allah ta’ala has mentioned whims and desires in a disparaging way.

Whims and desires become a taghut that are worshiped besides Allah when someone obeys them instead of obeying Allah.

Let’s not confuse taking whims and desires as a god with sinning. A person can sin without leaving the fold of Islam. But what’s meant by obeying their whims and desires is that their whims and desires dictate to them and are their measure of distinction between right and wrong. In other words, their whims and desires are the ruling source over things instead of the Words of Allah and His Shari’ah.

As a result, the one who obeys his/her whims and desires has taken them as a god besides Allah, which in turn makes the whims and desires a taghut.  

Likewise, when someone’s walaa (loves, befriends, supports, and protects others) is because of their whims and desires or their baraa (hates, disassociates from, and shows enmity to others) is because of their whims and desires – even if this contradicts the Shari’ah of Allah – then he/she has taken his whims and desires as a god beside Allah.

Allah ta’ala says (interpretation of the meaning):

Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? (Al Furqan 25/43)

And keep yourself patient by being with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever in neglect. (Al Kahf 18/28)

So, have you seen him who has taken his desires as his god? (al Jathiyya 45/23)

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to restrain himself from his evil whims and desires, he or she has to make takfir on those who follow their desires and on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

The one or something that isn’t loved for the sake of Allah, but for his own sake

Why is the one or something that is loved for his own sake a taghut and how is he worshiped?

Loving someone not for Allah’s sake, but for their own sake, and making friendship and enmity for them, is worshiping them. Because this gives a feature and attribute that belongs only to Allah to a person. The person who consented to be given this title and feature is a taghut.

This can be a single person like a ruler, a sheikh, a party leader, a celebrity (actor, singer, sports people), a woman, or a group of people like a nation, a tribe etc. 

There are people who set up equals and rivals with Allah and love them with the love due to Allah. But those who believe are stronger in their love for Allah. (Al Baqarah 2/165)

It also can be material things and similar things.

Abu Huraira, (radhiya-Allahu anhu), reported,that the Messenger of Allah, (salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam), said:“Perish the slave of Dinar, Dirham (silver and gold, e.g. money), Qatifa (thick soft cloth), and Khamisa (a garment), for if he is given, he is pleased; otherwise he is displeased.“ (Bukhari 6435)

In this hadith the Messenger of Allah, (sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam), uses the word slave/worshipper of dirham because most of the people connect their lives to this and maintain their relations with other people for this purpose. 

Such people only think about how to make a profit, how to increase their wealth, and how to make connections (network) with the “right” people that’ll help them reach their goal/s. 

For this reason, in places where they have financial gain, they speak well, show a smiling face and accept to be humiliated. In places where they do not earn financially, they become sullen, disobedient, arrogant and rebellious.

This hadith also shows that ibadah isn’t limited to acts like prostrating, fasting, pilgrimage etc, as most people believe. 

The Messenger of Allah, (Peace and blessings be upon him), said:”Whoever uses all his strength to increase his wealth, should know that this is for taghut.” (Bazzar, Tabarani – al Awsat)

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject those who are loved for their own sake and deny them the “right” to be loved for their own sake. He or she has to make takfir on those who love someone or something for their own sake, and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

The one who isn’t obeyed for the sake of Allah, but for his sake 

Why is the one who is obeyed for his own sake a taghut and how is he worshiped?

The one who is obeyed not for the sake of Allah, but for their own sake is a taghut. This is because this person is obeyed in truth or falsehood and his/her order is not objected to or rejected. 

For, a person who is obeyed in truth or falsehood, and whose orders are not objected to has become a taghut that is worshiped beside Allah. 

For example, drinking alcohol is prohibited in Islam. But if a person orders someone not to drink alcohol and is obeyed for their own sake, then the one who’s obeyed is a taghut. This is because the person didn’t stop drinking alcohol for the sake of Allah (following the command of Allah) but for the sake of the one who ordered him/her. 

A person who is obeyed not for the sake of Allah but for their own sake may be a ruler, a party leader, a tribal chief, a sheikh or others.

O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And, if you disagree about something, refer it back to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. (An Nisa 4/59)

So do not obey the kafirin (disbelievers), and strive against them with it a great striving. (Al-Furqan 25/52)

And do not obey any contemptible one who swears much. (Al Qalam 68/10)

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject those who are obeyed for their own sake and deny them the “right” to be obeyed for their own sake. He or she has to make takfir on those who obey someone for their own sake, and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

Homeland and nationalism

Why is homeland and nationalism a taghut and how are they worshiped?

Homeland and nationalism is a taghut that is worshiped besides Allah because love and enmity are for the country and the nation. 

All kinds of “rights” and laws are provided and friendship is shown to those living within the borders of the homeland, regardless of whether they are the biggest kuffar and most evil people or not. But those living outside the borders of the homeland are not shown the same friendship and the same “rights and laws”, even if they are the most pious people. Therefore homeland and nationalism is a taghut that is worshiped other than Allah.

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject homeland and nationalism. He or she has to make takfir on people who lead their lives according to homeland and nationalism and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

Tribalism

Humanism

Why is humanism a taghut and how is humanism worshiped?

Humanism is a taghut that is worshiped beside Allah because friendship and enmity, war and peace are made because of this belief and idea. The idea of ​​humanism offers people that regardless of their religion and beliefs, all people are equal in terms of rights and law. According to this ideology; the most pious person and the most wicked person are equal. Because they are human, there is no difference between them.

Those who adhere to the idea of humanism do everything in their power to defend this idea. If they do something, they say that they did it for humanity. If one of them has made financial aid; he says “I have done financial aid for humanity”. If he took part in a war; he says: “I fought for humanity.” Thus, they say that they do everything for humanity. Thus, humanity becomes a taghut that is worshiped besides Allah.

Many people, even if they don’t ascribe themselves to this ideology or don’t label themselves as “humanist”, believe in it by having convictions such as all humans are equal, men and women are equal, etc.  

According to Humanists International, “Humanism is a democratic and ethical lifestance which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. It stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethics based on human and other natural values in a spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. It is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality.”

Therefore humanism is a taghut and whoever believes in such an ideology, supports it or is pleased with it is a kafir.

Community, public, populace

Why are a community, populace and public a taghut and how are they worshiped?

If the people are seen as the source of the rule and given the authority to give orders, to choose the ruler of the country and the law to be applied in the state, even if they do not choose a law that is contrary to the laws of Allah, they are a taghut who is worshiped other than Allah ta’ala. The same applies if the populace and their customs are seen as the norm and scale, which  (truth and falsehood and right and wrong are measured) people have to follow and integrate.

In some cases the majority

Why is the majority (in some cases) a taghut and how is the majority worshiped?

According to the principle of majority rule, which is one of the foundations of the religion of democracy, which most of the people in our time adhere to; the majority’s ruling is an absolute rule, regardless of whether it is right or not, this rule must be obeyed, consented to and acted upon.

According to those who adhere to the religion of democracy, the decision chosen by the majority of the people has to be adhered to and implemented,  even though it is contrary to the decree of Allah and His Messenger, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam. This is how the majority is worshiped. 

In addition, accepting that the rule of the majority is the supreme judgment and that it is not permissible for anyone to reject, object to or give consent to this rule is also worshiping it. Because judgment belongs only to Allah alone. Only His judgment cannot be challenged.

The Hague injustice court

Why is the Hague court a taghut and how is it worshiped?

The so-called International Court of Justice, which has its seat in The Hague, in the Netherlands is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The court, which is composed of 15 judges, settles, in accordance with international law, legal disputes between states submitted to it by them. 

Judgments delivered by the court (or by one of its chambers) in disputes between states are binding upon the parties concerned. Article 94 of the United Nations Charter provides that “each member of the United Nations undertakes to comply with the decision of [the court] in any case to which it is a party”.

In this court, the laws of Allah, the Almighty, are never respected or valued in the matters to be judged. For this reason, this court is the taghut. Whoever applies to this court to be judged, has applied to the taghut and has worshiped taghut.

All the states that are members of the United Nations have submitted to this taghut and accepted that they will appoint this court as an arbitrator in the conflicts between them. 

“Have you not seen those who claim to have faith in that which has been revealed to you, and that which was revealed before you, and they wish to go for judgment (in their disputes) to the Taghut, when they have been ordered to reject them? But the Devil wishes to lead them far astray.” (An Nisa 4/60)

But the reality is that two-thirds of the people on earth worship these “simple” things. Look at China, Japan and most Asian countries with their huge populations. Look at some people in America, Africa and Europe! You will see that most of the people living there are pagans and worship idols and images.

When you look at the Indian continent, for example, you will see that most of the people there worship cows, idols and tombs.

Look at Crusader Europe! Churches and places of worship are full of idols, crosses and pictures that are worshiped other than Allah. Aren’t their churches full of statues and pictures of the so-called saints and priests?

Also, when you look at the countries that once were the Land of Islam, you will see that tombs, graves and shrines worshiped there. It is possible to come across a tomb that is worshiped in every one of these countries, and journeys are made just to visit these places. And the taghut at the head of these states protect these tombs and encourage visits to them.

Again, it is possible to see the idols, statues and pictures symbolizing the rulers and chiefs of every state everywhere. The idols of these taghut in different sizes and shapes are placed at the entrances of the cities, at the crossroads, in schools and in large establishments. 

If you go to many so-called Muslim countries, you’ll see photos of their tawagheet leaders in small shops and big businesses. Saudi, Morocco, Emirates, Qatar, and Syria are just a few examples where the image of their taghut leader is proudly displayed. In fact, if a shop owner doesn’t display an image of their taghut leader, their loyalty may be questioned. In some countries like Turkey, it’s (by law) an offense to not display an image of their taghut leader. 

On certain days or just as they desire, people stand in front of their taghut leaders and perform the worship of standing upright to these beings to show respect. Each of these is a taghut that is worshiped besides Allah.

Flags

Why are flags a taghut and how are they worshiped?

Flags are another taghut that are worshiped other than Allah, because acts of worship like honoring it, staying in front of it and other similar deeds which only can be done to and for Allah ta’ala are done for it. In some countries the love and respect for the flag has taken such a degree that a person is not even allowed to scratch his head or do a movement while the flag is being presented. 

People honor their flag, its colors and symbols and proudly want to be associated with the flag of their nation. They make the flag their identity and celebrate it. On national days across the world, people – whether it’s in Saudi or the U.S. – proudly display their flag and its colors. They paint their faces the colors of their flag, wear clothes that have the same colors, bake or make foods of the colors, and carry the flag or display it on their windows, balconies, cars, and/or businesses. 

All these acts and displays are a sign of the glorification of these flags – when glorification is for Allah alone. 

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you nations and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most notable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Aware. (Al Hujarat 49/13)

But it’s not only national flags that are a taghut. Sports teams flags are also tawagheet that people worship. The fans proudly carry, display (at their home, social media profiles, car, etc.) the flag of the team they support. Like the national flag, they also wear the colors of their team’s  flag even if they don’t carry the flag. 

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to disrespect and hate flags, and reject the worship of flags. He or she has to make takfir on people who worship flags by honoring them, loving them in any other form and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

National anthems

Similar to flags are national anthems; they are worshiped besides Allah, because acts of worship like honoring it, staying in front of it and other similar deeds which only can be done to and for Allah ta’ala are done for it. In most countries the love and respect for the national anthem has taken such a degree that a person is not allowed to scratch his head or do movements while the national anthem is played. 

In some countries, the national anthem is played before the school day starts or some kind of a ceremony is done in honor of it. As a form of ibadah, students and teachers have to stand a certain way and have “khushoo” for this anthem and what it represents.

Atheism

Many might ask, how can an ideology that doesn’t even believe in the existence of God be worshiped? Atheism is a taghut because it’s an ideology that believes and promotes the idea that everything in this world came about by coincidence – that there is no Creator. Allah is the Creator, the Sustainer, the One Who sends down rain, the One Who makes the sun shine, the One Who gives and takes life, and the One who lets the crops grow from seeds. 

Believing in these Attributes is a crucial part of Tawheed Ar Rububiyyah. Ascribing any of them to someone other than Allah (like the clouds make it rain etc) is associating a partner with Allah.

According to atheism all these attributes and many more don’t belong to Allah ta’ala, but belong to whoever and whatever they ascribe it to. They teach this ideology in schools through the theory of evolution and living a godless life through the pursuit of desires, materialism, careers, and other empty things.

A Muslim has to reject atheism. He or she has to make takfir on atheists and their ideologies, and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

Media

Why is media a taghut and how is it worshiped?

A lot of people take whatever they hear and see in the media as the truth; as if it was “revelation”. They don’t question or even doubt the narrative the media presents them. They lead their lives according to what they hear, see (and sometimes read) in the media. They accept as right what the media presents them as right and they accept as wrong what the media presents them as wrong.

The fashion industry is an evil, immoral and corrupt industry that not only promotes nakedness but has made materialism and itself, an object of worship. 

This taghut tells people how they have to dress, what they have to wear at any given time (i.e. season) and how their outfits should be. People follow these trends despite the fact that this industry contradicts the clear rules for dress code according to the Shariah. 

It’s important to note here that even if someone doesn’t follow fashion trends in their clothing, they can still follow and obey this industry’s general guidelines when it comes to accessories or in glorifying brands. 

It’s important to note here that there are some people who don’t follow fashion trends in their clothing. However, they still follow and obey this industry when it comes to its trends in accessories such as handbags or sunglasses. They glorify particular brands and buy items because they’re from x or y. Those people, even if they can’t afford these brands, will try to buy the smallest item even if it’s a pen or a keychain! 

Loving something for its own sake, being proud of owning it and wanting to be seen with it are all forms of glorifying these items or brands. 

In short, anyone who follows – one way or another – the trends set by this taghut industry has taken the fashion industry as a god as obedience is worship. 

Even though it’s not directly linked to the fashion industry, the same goes for those who worship car models, electrical devices, houses they live in for show, etc. 

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the fashion industry. He or she can’t dress according to fashion trends as a Muslim follows the commands of Allah in everything including dress code. A Muslim has to make takfir on people who lead their lives according to fashion trends and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

Celebrities and so-called stars

Why are celebrities a taghut and how are they worshiped?

Celebrities are among the biggest taghut in our time. People bow in front of them, they prostrate to them, they follow their “advice” – which in reality are but whispers from shaytaan – and they obey them. Among these celebrities are movie “stars”, singers, actors, sport-people and others. 

Celebrities are idolized and loved for their own sake. A person may faint if they see their favorite celebrity or closely monitor their lives to follow in their example. To the point that some people copy their favorite celebrity even in diet, dress, and lifestyle. They may even go to other extremes and change their appearance to resemble that celebrity such as dying their hair color, cutting it to match their favorite celebrity, etc.

A Muslim has to reject celebreties and make takfir on these modern day idols. He or she has to make takfir on these celebrities who are not only worshiped but who are pleased with being worshiped. A Muslim has to make takfir on people who worship celebrities and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

Traditions

Why are traditions a taghut and how are they worshiped?

Most people on earth follow the customs and traditions of their forefathers, especially in matters of faith. It is rare that people change the faith on which they were raised. Most people make sure that their children follow their religion or philosophy. 

When they are told, “Follow what Allah has revealed,” they say, “We follow only what we found our parents doing.” What if their parents did not understand, and were not guided? (Al Baqarah 2/170)

When they are told, “Come to what Allah has revealed, and to the messenger,” they say, “What we found our parents doing is sufficient for us.” What if their parents knew nothing, and were not guided? (al Maidah 5/104)

A Muslim, on the other hand, only follows Qur’an and Sunnah, and not the traditions of his or her people – even if some of these customs or traditions are not prohibited in Islam. 

Tragically, the majority of people who call themselves Muslim today are devoted to the ways of their forefathers and “worship” the way their Yemeni, Pakistani, Saudi, Turkish, Somali, Moroccan,etc, parents “worship.”

Science

Why is science a taghut and how is it worshiped?

Science can be defined as the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence. It is a system of acquiring knowledge based on studies, experiments, etc. This definition is valid for both, Islam as well as science. Science and Islam are linked because Islam not only places a high premium on science but positively encourages the pursuit of it. 

However, if people take everything that science and scientists come up with as revelation – and that’s exactly what they do – science becomes a taghut which is worshiped beside Allah ta’ala. If truth and falsehood is measured according to science – and that’s exactly what’s done today – science becomes a taghut which is worshipped instead of Allah.

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject science whenever it opposes Qur’an and Sunnah. He or she can’t believe in science without confirming that it conforms with the Qur’an and Sunnah. He or she has to make takfir on people who take science as a guide and the ultimate truth, and make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them.

Why are Wizards, sorcerers, magicians taghut and how are they worshiped?

Many people worship magicians, due to their belief that magicians and wizards have the power to harm or benefit. They fear them and hope from these magicians they way a Muslim fears and hopes from Allah.

“They followed what the devils used to recite in the reign of Sulaimān (Solomon); and it was not Sulaimān who became an infidel, but the devils did become infidels, teaching people magic, and what had been sent down to the two angels, Hārūt and Mārūt, in Babylon. And these two did not teach anyone without first having said (to him), “We are but a trial, so do not go infidel.” Then, they used to learn from them that with which they could cause separation between a man and his wife. But they were not to bring harm through it to anyone without the will of Allah.They used to learn what harmed them and did no good to them; and they certainly knew that he who buys it has no share in the Hereafter. And, indeed, vile is the thing for which they sold themselves away. If only they knew! (Al Baqarah 2/102)

Another important thing to note is that magic can only be done by committing kufr and shirk. This is because doing this deed is done with the help of the Kuffar among the jinn and by glorifying them. A magician is someone who claims to be able to influence things and do wonderful things. Magicians ridicule the word of Allah when they use their magic to please the shayateen.

While performing magic, magicians write the letters of Allah’s word backwards with blood or other impurities. Or they write the texts or say the words that the shayateen are pleased with. The shayateen help them by responding to what is written and said.

So a person can’t perform magic or be a magician and still be a Muslim. 

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject wizards, magicians and magic. He or she can’t believe that wizards or magicians have the power to cause harm or benefit. A Muslim has to make takfir on magicians and people who believe that magicians can cause harm or benefit, and has to make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

Oracles, soothsayers and others who claim to have knowledge of the Unseen (horoscopes fall into this category too)

Why are oracles and those who claim to know the unseen taghut and how are they worshiped?

Allah alone has knowledge of the unseen. Believing that anybody else knows the unseen or the future is worshiping him or her.  

“He alone is the All-Knower of the Unseen, and He does not disclose His Unseen matters to anyone. Except to a Messenger whom He has chosen, and then He makes a band of watching guards (angels) to march before him and behind him.” (Jinn 72/26-27)

“And with Him lie the keys to the Unseen, no one knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in the land and in the sea; not a leaf falls except that He knows about it. There is not a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything fresh or dry, but that it is written in a Clear Record.” (Al An’am 6/59)

The jewish clerics (rabbis)

They have taken their rabbis (scholars) and their monks as gods beside Allah, and also Masih the son of Maryam. And they were not commanded but to worship only One God. There is no god but He. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him. (at Tawbah 9/31)

They try to enforce veganism on everyone out of “mercy” for the animals, thus claiming to be more merciful than the Most Merciful.

The NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) 

Why is NATO a taghut and how is it worshiped?

NATO is an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 member states – 28 European and two North American. Its member states agree to defend each other against attacks by third parties. 

Their charter, the North Atlantic Treaty starts with the following sentences: “The Parties to this Treaty reaffirm their faith in the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and their desire to live in peace with all peoples and all governments. They are determined to safeguard the freedom, common heritage and civilisation of their peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law.”

Article 5 of this treaty says: “The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defense recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.”

The NATO is a taghut because they call their member-states to love each other and have friendship with each other for the sake of their organisation. This friendship goes even so far that in the case of an armed attack against one member all other members will assist this country in defending themselves.

Why is the so-called islamic state a taghut and how is it worshiped?

The so-called islamic state is a taghut because friendship and enmity are made for this state. Verdicts are given by this state and its scholars that have to be followed by every person living on the territory of this state, even if these verdicts are opposing the Qur’an and Sunnah. People who are calling out the falsehood of this state with evidence from Qur’an and Sunnah are executed by this state and its minions.

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the so-called islamic state and cannot believe that there is anything islamic about this state when they clearly oppose and reject the Quran and Sunnah. He or she has to make takfir on them and their members and followers, and he or she has to make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

The FIFA (International Federation of Football Association) 

Why is FIFA a taghut and how is it worshiped?

According to the FIFA website: “FIFA, world’s football governing body, also acts as the legislator in all kinds of football activities.”

According to article 7.1 of the FIFA statutes: “each member association shall play association football in compliance with the Laws of the Game issued by The IFAB. Only The IFAB may lay down and alter the Laws of the Game. “

According to article 8.3 of the FIFA statutes, “every person and organization involved in the game of football is obliged to observe the Statutes and regulations of FIFA.”  

According to article 14.1 of the FIFA statutes, ”Member associations have the following obligations: 

a) to comply fully with the Statutes, regulations, directives and decisions of FIFA bodies at any time as well as the decisions of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) passed on appeal on the basis of art. 57 par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes; 

b) to take part in competitions organized by FIFA; 

c) to pay their membership subscriptions; 

d) to cause their own members to comply with the Statutes, regulations, directives and decisions of FIFA bodies; 

e) to convene its supreme and legislative body at regular intervals, at least every two years.”

There can’t be a legislator beside Allah whether it is in politics or in sports.  

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the FIFA. He or she can’t be a member of the FIFA in any way – not as an official and not as a player (neither as a professional nor as an amateur). He or she has to make takfir on FIFA and on everyone who is a member of FIFA, and he or she has to make takfir on everyone who doesn’t make takfir on them. 

The medical mafia (the pharmacy industry) 

Why is the pharma industry a taghut and how is it worshiped?

People are tested by various tests in the temporary world, and according to their reactions to these tests, they receive their reward in the Hereafter. Diseases and illnesses are one of these tests. It is Allah ta’ala Who sends down diseases and it is He Who also sends down the cure to each one of these diseases. 

The Messenger of Allah, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for every disease, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.” (Abu Dawud, Tibb 11, 3874)

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam,  said, There is no disease that Allah has sent down, except that He also has send down its treatment.(Bukhari 5678)

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah did not send down any disease but that he also sent its cure.”In another narration, the Prophet, salla-Allahu alahi wa sallam, said, “One who has knowledge of it knows it, and one ignorant of it is ignorant.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3438)

According to these ahaadith it is clear that there is a cure for every disease. We cannot say, “There is no cure for this or that disease.” If the medical professionals haven’t found a cure for particular diseases, it proves their lack of research and nothing else. It is also possible that some patients are cured with a particular treatment and not others. Because in reality, it is Allah ta’ala Himself who cures due to these treatments, and not the medicine itself.

And when I am sick, it is He Who cures me. (ash Shu’ara 26/80)

The pharmaceutical industry, which began in the mid-1800s, states that they discover, develop, produce, and market pharmaceutical drugs for use as medications to be administered to patients with the aim to cure them, vaccinate them, or alleviate symptoms. At the same time they try to hide, invalidate and ridicule parts of the cures which were sent down by Allah, and are widely known as alternative or traditional medicine.

People worship the pharma industry by relying on this industry for its toxic cures and treatments when cure comes from Allah. 

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the pharma industry and those who work for them. He or she has to believe that cure comes from Allah ta’ala and not from these man-made chemicals. For example, if someone takes a painkiller and their pain disappears, it’s not because of the painkiller they took, but Allah alleviated their pain through this means. 

A Muslim has to make takfir on the pharma industry and those who work for them and on those who don’t make takfir on them.

Sport teams

Why are sport teams a taghut and how are they worshiped?

Supporters and fans of sports teams love their team more than anything. They travel to support their team, they befriend people who support the same team and they show enmity towards people who support a rival team. They even fight and combat the rival supporters and in some cases even kill supporters from rival teams. Many of their chants glorify their teams. All of this is worshiping these teams, which makes these teams a taghut. 

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject sport teams. He or she can’t support or be a fan of a sports team. A Muslim has to make takfir on sport teams and their members and on those who support these teams and he or she has to make takfir on those who don’t make takfir on them.

The entertainment industry, including music, film and gaming industry – the adult industry is part of this industry

Why is the entertainment industry a taghut and how is it worshiped?

The entertainment industry not only promotes haram, drugs, immorality, zina, and filth, but they also promote magic, other types of kufr, atheism and shirk and they mock the verses and signs of Allah ta’ala. There is hardly a movie or song where you won’t see the praising and glorifying of shirk and kufr in one way or another. This industry calls, especially young people, to worship the so-called stars which are promoted by this industry while mocking good and promoting evil.

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject the entertainment industry. He or she can’t be part of this industry. He or she has to make Takfir on the entertainment industry and on the people involved in this industry, and he or she has to make takfir on those who don’t make takfir on them.

The Dajjal 

Why is the Dajjal a taghut and how is the Dajjal worshiped?

A known taghut, Dajjal will claim that he is a prophet and after this, he will claim he is our Lord.

Rasulullah, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “He (the Dajjal) will start by saying “I am a Prophet” and there is no Prophet after me. Then a second time he will say: “I am your Lord.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4077)

Allah ta’ala says: 

“And whoever amongst them says: ‘Verily, I am a God besides Him (Allah)’, then this person’s recompense will be the Hellfire. That is the way We recompense the wrongdoers.” (al Anbiya 21/29)

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject Dajjal, make takfir on Dajjal, stay away from Dajjal and not follow him and make takfir on those who follow Dajjal and on those who don’t make takfir on Dajjal and his followers.

Shaytaan

Why is shaytaan a taghut and how is he worshiped?

Shaytaan is the head of all evil and the head of all tawagheet. He has sworn that he will beautify evil, change the creation of Allah, and lead mankind astray. He calls the people to worship other than Allah and uses jinn and human devils to achieve his goal. 

He said, “Now that You have led me astray, I will certainly sit for them (in ambush) on Your straight path. Then I will come upon them from their front side and from their behind, and from their right and from their left. You will not find most of them grateful. (Al A’raf 7/16-17)

He said, “My Lord, since You made me go astray, I swear that I shall beautify for them (evils) on the earth, and shall lead all of them astray, except those of Your servants from among them who are chosen (by You).” (Al Hijr 15/39-40)

Following him, may he be cursed, in kufr and shirk and worshiping others beside Allah is worshiping him. 

“Did I not command you, O children of Adam, that you should not worship the Devil. Verily, he is a plain enemy to you.” (YaSin 36/60)

(Ibrahim said) My dear father, do not worship shaytaan. shaytaan is surely rebellious to the All-Merciful, (Allah). (Maryam 19/44)

They (all those who worship others besides Allah) invoke nothing but female deities besides Him (Allah), and they invoke nothing but shaytaan, a persistent rebel. (An Nisa 4/117)

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject shaytaan, make takfir on shaytaan and stay away from worshipping shaytaan and make takfir on those who worship shaytaan, and on those who don’t make takfir on shaytaan and his followers.

The groups and jamaat who call themselves islamic groups

Why are these groups taghut and how are they worshiped?

The groups and jamaat who call themselves islamic groups whose creed isn’t exclusively based on the Quran and Sunnah but on bits and pieces they see fit. They’re taghut because they call to their falsehood and call people to show friendship and enmity according to membership of the groups. Often the members of a certain group are made to hate the members of another group though their aqeeda (creed) is the same.    

How must one reject this taghut (Kufr bi-Taghut)?

A Muslim has to reject these groups and their members, make takfir on these groups and their members and make takfir on those who don’t make takfir on these groups and their members.

Conclusion

A person may say, how is everyone supposed to know that, for example, FIFA, the UN or others mentioned are a taghut. The answer is, that a person doesn’t have to know EVERY taghut by its name. But they have to know the correct definition of taghut. Once they know this correct definition, they will recognise EVERY taghut that has ever been, that is and that will be. 

Once a person knows this correct definition of taghut, they will recognize a taghut from miles away because a taghut is simply anything or anyone that:

a) transgresses the boundaries set by Allah

b) is obeyed without evidence from the Quran and Sunnah

c) is loved for its sake

d) is glorified the way only Allah should be

e) legislates what Allah has not legislated 

f) hides the truth and spreads falsehood (about the religion of Allah)

It’s therefore obligatory to learn the general definition of taghut so that a person can recognize it, reject it, and reject those who worship it or are pleased with it in any way, shape or form. 

There is no compulsion in the Religion. Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path. So whoever disbelieves in the Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has taken hold of the firmest handhold that will never break. And Allah is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (Al-Baqarah 2/256)

In this verse, we can clearly see that one cannot believe in Allah UNLESS he first rejects taghut. And a person CANNOT reject what they don’t know. This is why knowledge is key in Islam because the one who knows Allah knows others besides Allah, and the one who doesn’t know Allah is even more ignorant of others besides Allah. 

The tawagheet that are mentioned in this article are the general and there are many more of them. A person can use the taghut examples mentioned here to understand and compare others to them, be they the secret ones or the evident ones from them.

When you look at these tawagheet mentioned here, and the situation of people in our time, you will see that most people worship some or many of these tawagheet. 

So much so that these tawagheet are obeyed instead of Allah and His Messenger, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, friendship and enmity are made for their sake, people are judged not by the laws of Allah and His Messenger, salla-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, but by the rules of these tawagheet. Despite this, those who do so do not hesitate to claim that they are followers of Islam and that they are Muslims. But their situation refutes their claims! 

“And whoever amongst them says: ‘Verily, I am a God besides Him (Allah)’, then this person’s recompense will be the Hellfire. That is the way We recompense the wrongdoers.” (Al Anbiya 21/29)
