The Kursi and affirming the Two Feet as an Attribute of Allah, ta’ala

•

ʿAbdullah [ibn Aḥmad] narrated in al-Sunnah, with an authentic chain from Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with both of them—that he said:

“The Kursī is the place of the two feet, and the Throne – no one is capable of estimating its magnitude.”

ʿAbdullah also narrated through his chain from Abū Mūsā—may Allah be pleased with him—that he said:

“The Kursī is the place of the two feet, and it makes a creaking sound like the creaking of a saddle.”

Its narrators are trustworthy.

Al-Bayhaqī also narrated in al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt, through al-Suddī, from Murrah al-Hamdānī, from Ibn Masʿūd and a number of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, concerning His statement:

“His Kursī encompasses the heavens and the earth” [al Baqara 2:255],

that they said:

“The heavens and the earth are within the interior of the Kursī, and the Kursī is before the Throne, and it is the place of His two feet.”

Regarding the statement of Allah, ta’ala:

“His Kursī encompasses the heavens and the earth,”

he said:

“Indeed, the rock beneath the seventh earth, at the boundary of creation, has four angels upon its sides … their heads are beneath the Kursī, and the Kursī is beneath the Throne.”

He said:

“And He—ta’ala—is placing His two feet upon the Kursī.”

Some of these reports were authenticated by the leading scholars of the deen. As ʿAbdullah ibn Aḥmad—may Allah have mercy upon both of them—said in al-Sunnah, when he was asked about what had been narrated concerning the Kursī and the Lord, ta’ala, sitting upon it:

“I saw my father—may Allah have mercy upon him—authenticate these hadiths, the hadiths concerning the Vision, and adhere to them. He collected them in a book and narrated them to us.”

Al-Dāraqutnī said in al-Ṣifāt:

“Muḥammad ibn Makhlad narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dūrī narrated to us; he said: I heard Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām mention the chapter concerning the reports of the Vision, the Kursī and the place of the two feet, our Lord laughing because of the despair of His servants and the nearness of His change, where our Lord was before He created the heavens, and that Hell will not become full until your Lord, Mighty and Majestic, places His foot in it, whereupon it will say, ‘Enough, enough,’ and similar hadiths.”

Then he—may Allah have mercy upon him—said:

“These hadiths are authentic. The people of hadith and the jurists have transmitted them from one another, and according to us they are true; we have no doubt about them.”

Ḥarb also transmitted consensus in al-Sunnah concerning the statement:

“The Kursī is the place of His two feet”

—Glorified is He.

Ḥarb had stated that whoever contradicted anything he mentioned in al-Sunnah:

“is an innovator, outside the community, having departed from the methodology of the Sunnah and the path of truth.”

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdullah ibn Abī Zamanīn said:

“It is from the statements of Ahl al-Sunnah that the Kursī is before the Throne and that it is the place of the two feet.”

He then cited the report of Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him.

Abū Yaʿlā said in al-Ibṭāl:

“It is not permissible to think that of Him, because that would cause confusion concerning our Sharīʿah: namely, that he might transmit to them something which they think is part of our Sharīʿah while it is actually part of the law of another people. We must declare the Companions free of such a thing.”

Abū Yaʿlā also says in his refutation:

“Our Sharīʿah and the Sharīʿah of others are the same with regard to the attributes, because His attributes do not differ according to the differences between the revealed laws.”
