The Statement of al-Albānī about Allah ta’alas feet

The Statement of the Imam of the Jahmiyyah of our time, al-Albānī on recording [803–42] concerning the attribute of the two feet mentioned in the report of Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with both of them.

He was asked:

“Regarding the attributes of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, they are tawqīfī [established only by revelation], and there is no room for opinion or independent reasoning concerning them. Regarding affirming the two feet for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, based upon the statement of Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him—when he was asked about the Kursī and said, ‘It is the place of the two feet’: given that the texts reported in the Sunnah mention the attribute of the leg/foot in the singular with respect to Allah, Glorious and Exalted, if we affirm two feet for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would we have contradicted the aforementioned principle—that the attributes of Allah are tawqīfī and that there is no room for opinion or independent reasoning concerning them? Or should we restrict ourselves to affirming the rijl in the singular and refrain from affirming two feet?”

He replied:

“The hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, as you know, is mawqūf. With mawqūf hadiths, one cannot categorically say that they have the ruling of a marfūʿ report or that they do not have the ruling of a marfūʿ report. Rather, the matter requires distinction and detail. What my knowledge has led me to conclude is the following: if a mawqūf hadith cannot have originated from personal opinion and independent reasoning in the first place, and it cannot possibly have originated from the Isrāʾīliyyāt, then it has the ruling of a marfūʿ report. This hadith, however, is not of that kind, because it is possible that it originated from the Isrāʾīliyyāt.”
